Recent Cyberattack Hits Over 1000 Businesses Worldwide

A massive cyberattack, timed to coincide with the US 4th July holiday weekend has locked up the IT systems of over 1000 businesses across the world. Experts say the breach could turn out to be the largest ransomware attacked ever.

It all started when hackers breached the servers at Kaseya on Friday 2nd July, a Miami-based IT services company that provides security software to large-scale cybersecurity contractors, which in turn sell their security services to thousands of businesses worldwide. The breach allowed hackers to enter at least 40 cybersecurity contractors’ systems and, from there, they infected hundreds of businesses with ransomware over the weekend.

The attack encrypted infected businesses’ data, locking those firms out of their own IT systems. The hackers demanded ransoms of $50 000 from smaller companies and $5 million from larger companies in exchange for a special key that would allow them to decrypt their data and resume normal operations.

Most of the affected companies were in the US, but the cyber chaos also spread internationally. Swedish grocery chain Coop was forced to close 500 supermarkets on Saturday (3rd July) after the hack knocked its cash registers offline.

Cyberattacks like this are unpredictable and can have a devastating impact on a business. The products implemented by Tech Tree regularly have patches released to continually improve security. As part of managed services, Tech Tree will ensure that patching is routinely carried out to protect your company’s data.

REMINDER!

Windows Users
It is very important to ensure your devices are being updated which should be happening automatically even whilst working from home, depending on your home internet. The latest version is Windows 10 version 21H1. If you want to know more about what is new in this version click here.

Patch Tuesday: Microsoft regularly releases software patches usually every second Tuesday of every month for its software products. Please make sure you apply and restart you computer this week to have these updates applied to your device. For those of you who we managed under a service agreement we will be monitoring and will be in touch if they’re not being applied.

How to update: Allow yourself at least 10 – 15 minutes to fully shutdown and restart your system. This ensures patches are applied, this can also address (and solve) some problems you may be having with your system. You can also manually check by following steps that can be found here.
