iPhones in Australia may end up with different chargers following EU's universal cables push

They've been chewed by dogs, misplaced, stolen, repaired, tripped over, tangled, untangled, and sworn at. Now the familiar iPhone charger may be about to be unplugged for good.

Last week, the European Commission came to a provisional agreement requiring smartphones and other similar devices sold within EU borders to use the same USB-C charging port.

Though the rules don't single out the iPhone, Apple is most affected by the change, and has lobbied hard against a mandate that would effectively ban its proprietary Lightning connector, which has been standard on new iPhones since 2012.

Hardware makers and tech companies will have until late 2024 to make sure specified products sold in the EU have USB-C ports. These products include smartphones, tablets, headphones, cameras, e-readers, handheld game consoles, keyboards, and computer mice. Laptop makers have slightly longer: 40 months from the time European lawmakers approve the agreement, which should be soon.

What does this mean for Australians?

Apple could make USB-C standard on all new iPhones or only those sold in the EU, with the first option being most likely.

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference

Apple held its annual Worldwide Developers Conference on 6th June 2022. The Conference’s primary focus is on developers, software and services, however, sometimes lucky fans get a glimpse of some of the exciting new hardware coming their way, too.

The key highlights from the Conference include features in iOS 16 (which will be released later this year); updates to apps like iMessage, Apple Wallet & Apple Maps; upgrades to CarPlay; and the new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

REMINDER!

Windows Users
It is very important to ensure your devices are being updated which should be happening automatically even whilst working from home, depending on your home internet. The latest version is Windows 10 version 21H2. If you want to know more about what is new in this version here.

Patch Tuesday: Microsoft regularly releases software patches usually every second Tuesday of every month for its software products. Please make sure you apply and restart you computer this week to have these updates applied to your device. For those of you who we managed under a service agreement we will be monitoring and will be in touch if they’re not being applied.

How to update: Allow yourself at least 10 – 15 minutes to fully shutdown and restart your system. This ensures patches are applied, this can also address (and solve) some problems you may be having with your system. You can also manually check by following steps that can be found here.
